In my personal opinion, I feel Houston has been lacking in American amber style beer options. What was once a booming style has been dwindled down to just a small handful of breweries offering a solid year round amble ale. I found what is definitely a contender for my favorite amber in Middie Back from Elder Son Brewing. Middie Back is classically brewed to style and provides a crisp and smooth drinking experience that balances a sweet malt flavor with mild caramel note with a nice dry finish. Very good! I’ll try not to talk too much about the experience as I don’t want to give spoilers but if you love amber ales as much as I do then you’ll know the anticipation of ordering an amber and the excitement of waiting to see how it stacks up. Middie Back can be found on tap at Elder Son year round and for that, I’m thankful. Robert, owner and head brewer, tells me the story of how he wrote the recipe on the plane trip from Colorado as he had the exact same feeling of wanting a good clean amber. You can see the passion in his eyes as he relives the moment when he tells the story. Maybe it’s just the beer or exhaustion causing that glare – we won’t ever know.

Middie Back – Amber at Elder Son Brewery

If I’m being honest I’d say the part I’m most excited about is that Middie Back will be offered in cans to go soon. Don’t get me wrong you can get a crowler to go but there’s something special about having multiple cans in a cooler that really feels special. Middie Back will be sold in cans to go from the brewery towards the end of the August so swing by, try out this micro brewery in the Heights. It’s Houston Beer Month after all – why not support one of the newest breweries in town. Elder Son is nestled on North Shepherd just across the street from the popular Kroger on 11th in a cozy air conditioned tap room. Elder Son hosts a run club every Tuesday from 6:30-7 pm and offer multiple distances runs for all types of fitness runners. There is also a pizza shop that opened up right next door – so feel free to skip the run and make a bee line to the bar top for a sit with the locals.

Big Owl Craft Beer House & Turkey Forrest Brewing launching soon in east Heights area

If there is one thing that the pandemic has done, it has given people the opportunity to invest in their passions, and in Al and Victoria Gonzalez’ case, their passion was to open a craft beer bar in Houston. Thus the genesis of Big Owl Craft Beer House came to be. At the same time, their friends, Oscar Gonzalez and Louie Espinoza, had been home brewing for years under the name Turkey Forrest Brewing — the name stemming from Oscar’s dog, Forrest, and Louie’s cat, Turkey. Al and Victoria approached Oscar and Louie about bringing a small 1 bbl brewing operation into Big Owl, so that their beer can be served alongside other Houston and Texas favorites.

Once open, Big Owl will exclusively be a craft beer bar focused on products from Houston and Texas with 24 taps. One or two of these taps will be dedicated to Turkey Forrest beers, which currently is putting the final touches on a stout that has received great reviews with plans to add adjuncts as part of the beer rotation. With all four partners being grounded in their Latino roots and being the first 100% Latino-owned brewery, the bar and especially the Turkey Forrest beers will incorporate Hispanic culture, background and “flava” into everything they do. Licuados, aguas frescas and pulque style beers are all a part of future beer plans.

Although Big Owl has not opened yet, the owners have big plans for both the bar and brewery. Their vision for Turkey Forrest Brewing is to grow the operation beyond the Big Owl location and into its own brick and mortar location sustained by just its beers. The bar itself will host Loteria night, a game similar to Bingo, and other Latino-inspired events.

The bar’s location is 1848 Airline Dr, Suite C, at the northeast corner of the intersection of Airline Drive and W Cavalcade Street. The grand opening date has not been set, but the hope is that it will be sometime later this month.

Heights Bike Trail Brewery Tour – Sunday May 7th

This Sunday, May 7th, Holler, Platypus, and Eureka Heights are teaming up for a 3-stop brewery tour – on bikes. The majority of the route will be along the Heights Hike & Bike trail or on dedicated bike lanes, so it should be an easy ride. It’s even easier when you think about everyone who just completed the MS 150.

It will work a lot like the Saint Arnold pub crawls: pick up a card at your first stop, get it stamped at all 3 stops, and earn a free t-shirt. The shirts have to be picked up at Eureka Heights, so there are two strategies: 1) park at Eureka Heights, bike to Platypus & Holler, then bike back to your car, or 2) park at Holler, bike to Platypus, then to Eureka Heights, and return back to your car at Holler. Either way it’s less than a 10-mile round trip (Google Maps says that will take about an hour). If you want a group experience, Tap & Pedal Bike Touring will lead a group from Holler at 1pm.

If you don’t have a bike (or if you’re like me and your tires are always flat) there is a B-cycle station a 5-minute ride away from Holler at Stude park or a 7-minute ride away from Holler at Spotts park. Bonus: if you choose Spotts park and you return the bike around sundown then you can also watch the Waugh bridge bats take off.

(Hopefully we don’t actually need to tell you this, but please bike and drink responsibly. If you don’t feel safe biking, let a member of the brewery staff know and they will store your bike overnight.)
