Houston is about to receive a major external player in the haze craze with the draft only launch of Parish Brewing Company. Based in Broussard, Louisiana just outside Lafayette, Parish’s legendary Ghost In The Machine Double IPA had previously loomed tantalizingly close yet been unattainable, but expanded year-round packaging and distribution to Houston will allow us to enjoy this haze monster on a regular basis. For those not familiar with Ghost, it is a big 8.5% hazy Double IPA packed full of tropical juice and a surprisingly smooth drinkability. A hop bite is there but subtle, contributing to a near perfect package that has earned it the highest rated year-round produced beer from Louisiana.

In addition to Ghost, Parish has teamed up with Silver Eagle Distributors to bring to Houston a solid lineup that satisfies all spectrums of the beer drinkers’ palettes. Their most popular beer by volume is Canebrake, a self-described Louisiana Wheat Ale that uses locally grown sugarcane to lend a slight sweetness to the easy drinking wheat ale. South Coast is another easy drinker, balancing a traditional amber malt profile with noble hops to create a sessionable 5.1% backyard BBQ type of beer. Envie is Parish’s American Pale Ale that combines juice-laden tropical fruits with no harsh bitterness to yield an approachable hoppy beer that could easily convert people who claim to dislike anything with discernible hops. Things get kicked up a couple notches with Rêve, a glorious coffee stout that drinks like cold brew and crams an incredible amount of flavor into a surprisingly low 7.2% body. Parish plans to bring additional limited seasonal offerings to Houston, and we can also expect packaged retail in the spring.

The festivities kick off next Monday at Flying Saucer Downtown from 7-10 PM where Andrew Godley, Parish’s founder, will be on-site to mingle and meet Houston’s passionate craft beer community. Beyond that, if you can think of a good craft beer bar in the greater Houston area, there’s a strong chance they will be hosting a Parish event with either Andrew or a local Parish rep. For a full list of events, check out Silver Eagle’s event page.

I myself am very excited for Houston to be receiving Parish distribution. Having lived in New Orleans the past 1.5 years, I have been spoiled to try all of Parish’s offerings, and I often make the 2-hour drive to their taproom to try brewery exclusive beers and buy some of their limited releases that don’t see distribution. Houston is in for a treat with their year-round lineup, and prepare to have your minds blown when some of their limited release seasonal offerings make their way west on I-10 ***cough***DDH Ghost***cough.

NOLA Brewing is delivering on the hype with a full slate of launch events in the Houston area next week.

The party is officially getting started at Flying Saucer Monday evening. NOLA will have several of their flagship beers, as well as Piety, a sour beer aged in red wine barrels with tart cherries. Since it’s a Monday at Flying Saucer, all draft beers are $3, giving you the opportunity to check out NOLA’s range of beers without breaking the bank. Central Market is setting up their NOLA display Monday, and a demo tasting will follow Tuesday. For our College Station beer loving friends, West End Elixir Company will have a mix of Funk Series and IPAs on draft. I recently drank the Out Tequil-Ya tequila barrel aged sour at the brewery and I can assure you that their offerings are legit.

Tuesday will feature a tap takeover at Moon Tower Inn. Funk Series kegs will be served along with a special on the Coonass dog with the purchase of a NOLA pint. The Louisiana spirit will be running strong at the East End staple.

For the Southsiders, Flood Independent Distribution is putting on a pub crawl around 4 NASA area bars featuring every beer NOLA is sending to Houston. The party starts at J. Henry’s Draught House at 4:30 PM, moves to Beers Looking at You at 6 PM, heads to Nobi Public House at 7:30 PM, and wraps up at the “OG” Nobi Asian Grill from 9 PM to 10:30 PM. The first 12 people to get their cards punched at all 4 stops will have an opportunity to purchase a batch #1 bottle of Desire, a raspberry sour ale. Only 5 cases of this beer made it to Texas. (Click here for more details, including the taplist at each stop.)

Wednesday brings a slew of events throughout the city. Downtown Flying Saucer will be having another event, this time offering flights of NOLA’s finest, including releases from their Funk Series. Flying Saucer Sugar Land is debuting 5 of NOLA’s beers on their Elvis Glass night. Drink of Ages is featuring NOLA on their radio show starting at 7 PM, and will also be serving their lineup of liquid offerings.

On Thursday, The Hop Stop will be releasing NOLA’s brews, including a case of the limited release Desire raspberry sour ale.

In addition to the events listed above, retail locations throughout the city will be receiving their shipments of NOLA’s beers throughout the week. Expect their mainstays, a healthy selection of IPAs, and a limited selection of Funk Series bottles around town.

Representatives from the brewery – Dylan Lintern (COO), Derek Lintern (Director of Funk), and Ryan Veuthey (Brand Manager) – will be in town this week to share their love and knowledge of NOLA’s beers. They are not holding anything back from the Houston market, and this week of launch events shows their commitment to our beer scene. Kirk Coco, Owner / CEO of NOLA says, “We are excited to bring a little NOLA Funk to the Texas market!” Let’s return that love with a solid showing at these events and a full sampling of their offerings. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Talk to any Houstonian Beer Knurd and they will all agree: Flying Saucer Downtown is the OG Houston beer bar. No matter your opinion of other iconic beer bars in this wonderful city, they cannot compete with the volume of beer that Flying Saucer has amassed in its 17 years. With an ever-expanding stockpile, Flying Saucer is opening up the cellar.

In the past, Flying Saucer has only offered about ten different labels from the cellar at any given time. However, manager Josh Justice looked at bars that consistently have an extensive cellar list available, like ChurchKey in Washington, D.C., and realized that all of the incredible beer he receives shouldn’t just sit in the back for special occasions. Instead, it should be celebrated and enjoyed with friends. For this initial cellar opening, Saucer is releasing 65 of their 200 or so labels, then sitting back to see where this new menu will take them. After almost two decades of business, Josh is excited to be walking into new territory.

Saucer has made it quite easy to explore the new cellar menu. All of the new bottles are on the regular bottle menu, sorted by style. They are mixed in with the everyday bottle selection, so don’t be surprised to see Firestone Walker XVIII near Arrogant Bastard. The hope is that this idea takes off, and Flying Saucer can host a larger cellar menu for everyday purchase. I am seriously excited to see this happen and to see what bottles Flying Saucer will pull out of the cellar next.

A few highlights of the new list: 2008 Avery Mephistopheles, 2013-2015 vertical of Brooklyn  Black OPS, 2008 & 2009 Avery Samael’s, 2013 BFM Abbaye De Saint Bon-Chien Grand Cru Rum Barrel, and more Firestone Walker special release than I could ever hope for.

Check some photos and the full list of beers being released below, then go catch some rare and incredible releases at Flying Saucer!

2011 4.20 Glass

The Famous Cheech and Chong 420 Glass

There has been some talk and a bit of grumbling among the Houston Beer Knurd community with the Flying Saucer’s decision to end their glass night at their downtown location. Manager Joshua Justice reached out to Houston Beer Guide to offer some information about the decision.

Kenneth Krampota: Why did you decide to cancel the glass night?

Joshua Justice: Demand for glass night has waned here recently and as more and more bars begin to offer glass nights, we felt the need to take the lead and offer something new, different and unique. Kind of like glass night used to be.

KK: It appears that the Sugar Land location is continuing their glass night, is this a location specific decision?

JJ: It is. Some other Flying Saucers have moved on from Glass Night as well but this was a decision unique to us.

KK: What has been the reaction? Has anything made you rethink your decision?

JJ: A bit mixed but once we’ve explained the reasoning and shared what we have up our sleeve for Wednesdays going forward, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. No turning back.

KK: You’ve had a few events to countdown the ending of this, and the last one is on the 31st, a great glass swap. Is there anything you’d like to tell us about that event?

JJ: We want all the hardcore glass collectors out that night. We will have almost our entire collection of old brew glasses out and on display (and on sale).  Feel free to bring glasses to trade, sell or giveaway. It will be a great chance to try to pick up that elusive Cheech and Chong 420 glass.

KK: What are you planning to replace the glass night with weekly?

JJ: Flight Night. We are going to debut Flight Night September 7th with Hitachino White Flights. We will be pouring Hitachino White, Kiuchi no Sizuku ( a spirit made with distilled White) and a cocktail made using both. Upcoming flight nights include Sierra Nevada/Mahrs flights, Oktoberfest flights and more.

KK: Finally, I know a lot of people collect beer glasses, what should we tell them to do with all of the extra cabinet space they’ll have?

JJ: Don’t go collecting gnomes or Wedgewood plates just yet. Flying Saucer glasses like 420, John Lennon and Texas Independence day aren’t going anywhere. Plus we will always have special glasses on sale when we find cool glassware (Das Boot anyone?) Glass night might be dying, but we will still be the best place in town for cool glassware.

She’s sixteen, she’s beautiful, and her beer will be yours and mine. Flying Saucer Houston is celebrating its sixteenth anniversary on August 14 with some amazing beers and sweets from local eateries. The Saucer will have special tappings, a complete bottle list featuring some beers Saucer has never offered before (psst… a little birdie told me that list includes Wicked Weed!), and four dessert pairings, including a German chocolate cake flight, an anniversary cake from Fluff Bake Bar, and ice cream floats courtesy of Cloud 10 Creamery.Sweet16

The tap list includes the new Brash Double IPA, Pussalia, which I hear is dry-hopped and “the dankiest beer” they’ve ever made; I can’t wait to try that one. A couple of my personal favorites, Deschutes Abyss and Real Ale Four Horsemen, will also be on tap. New kids on the block Eureka Heights will be represented with their Space Train IPA and Buckle Bunny Cream Ale.

Locally beloved Lone Pint Yellow Rose will be on cask, and La Muerta, Elijah Craig 12 La Muerta and Elijah Craig 12 Coconut La Muerta from our friends in San Antonio, Freetail, will also be available. I’m excited for the three different casks of my favorite Houston IPA, Saint Arnold Art Car. Other beers on the tap list include: Ballast Point Barrel Aged Indra Kunindra, Deschutes Black Butte XXIV & XXV, Real Ale Benedictum, Great Divide BA Hibernation, Nebraska Coffee Fathead and Vanilla Fathead, Destihl Blueberry Gose and, last but not least, I’m really looking forward to trying the new-to-Texas Tallgrass Wooden Rooster and Buffalo Sweat.

The party starts at noon. Hope to see you there!
