Saloon Door Brewing in Webster Texas is releasing the first beer in the new Cellar Door Series this weekend in the taproom. This new series will contain new beer recipes with plans to release every quarter. The first beer coming out of the gate is named “Vert Di Foorke”, a Belgian style quadruple clocking in at 10% abv but like most of Saloon Door beers, this beer flies under the radar and doesn’t taste like 10%. In case you are wondering, Vert Di Foorke translates to ‘What The Fu**’ and will be sold at the taproom only available April 1st, starting at noon to midnight for the day of the event or until bottles runs out. Vert Di Foorke is a collaboration with the Bay Area Mastronauts (BAM), the award winning local home brew club that meets monthly in the taproom. Jason Graham, one of the owners at Saloon Door, tells me it’s an honor to partner with BAM, as the organization has supported since the brewery since Day 1 of operation. Vert Di Foorke will also be on tap but sold primarily in 22oz bombers ($15) out of the tasting room. Excellent price point too!

Bottled and Labeled – Vert Di Foorke

I was lucky enough to sample Vert Di Foorke directly from the brite tank and boy – this is a treat! It poured a beautiful dark brown with delicate tan head. The nose aroma has a plum or raisins characteristic that stands out with a nice tone of toffee that reminds me of my childhood. The last thing I pick up a mild fruit ester on the nose – faint but blends perfectly with all the beautiful balance of flavor. Vert Di Foorke drinks incredibly smooth for a 10% big beer. Its mild roast that you get on the initial taste is followed with a smooth plum tone to balance the flavors. Vert Di Foorke leaves a nice pop of chocolate taste that lingers on the backend and the mouthfeel is creamy to the tongue.

A quick sample of Vert Di Foorke

Jason predicts the next scheduled Cellar Door release will be sometime in June. Saloon Door hasn’t decided what style that beer will be yet, and is actively taking feedback for what you’d love to see coming out. I’d personally like to see a Barleywine style come out of Webster, especially if it’s left to sit and age in bourbon barrels. Jason tells me they are super excited to finally launch the Cellar Door Series as it’s been in the works for a very long time. They were planning on starting the series in 2020 but the pandemic put it on the shelf making this release long awaited for the past three years.

Show the brewery some support by coming out and trying this new beer – don’t leave without letting the team know how you like it and what you think the next release should be.  If the beer wasn’t enough to bring you in, the brewery is also hosting a crawfish boil on the 1st – double bonus! I know how much Houstonians love their crawfish! There is a ton going on at Saloon Door Brewing these days, so keep a look out for a follow up from me very soon. Did someone say brewing up a collaboration soon? More on that later!

Saloon Door Brewing and I have something in common that I’ve said many times before and will continue to say. What do we have in common besides a love for good beer? We both believe it’s always stout season – year around. That being said, Saloon Door is hosting their annual barrel fest this Saturday November 19th at 2pm. This is an event I attended yearly to taste every barrel aged beer that is available. This year, the brewery plans to bring 7 beers to the table that I can’t wait to get my hands on.

This week, I was lucky enough to preview a few samples of The original Russian Imperial Stout named “I Must Break you”. It’s perfectly balanced with dark chocolate and roast. I can’t wait to try it once it’s been in the barrel. Also on the list for the barrel fest is my personal favorite Reindiculous – a fantastic peanut butter and white chocolate russian imperial Stout. One new beer that I hope to try is the Funfetti Cake Imperial Cream Ale – sounds like a party!

May be an image of text that says 'Barrel Fest 2022 Taproom Beer Releases BBA Must Break You RIS (13%) BBA Ludicrous AF RIS (13%) BBA Reindiculous RIS (13%) BBA Woke AF RIS (13%) BBA Orange Cordial RIS (13%) S BRENINE BREWING BBA Brewster Cogburn ICA (10.6%) BBA Funfetti Cake ICA (10.6%)'

For this event, snag a VIP pass to get a flight of your choice bourbon barrel aged goodies, a snifter pour of any BBA beer, and a large 32oz crowler to take home. While you are there, take a brewery tour with the awesome brewers and get a glimpse behind the scenes of the amazing beer being made at Saloon Door.

VIP PASS ($50 – w/$65 value) includes BBA flight (five 4oz pours)- BBA snifter pour (9oz)- BBA crowler to go beer (32oz)- Brewery tour w/a snifter of your choice.

I mentioned my favorite beer Saloon Door makes is Reindiculous and I had the pleasure of sampling it after being aged in a bourbon barrel. The white chocolate greets you up from and brings a smile to your face followed by creamy peanut butter. On the backend you get that nice warming feeling that will really go a long way to help fight against this weekends low temperatures that are creeping in. The aroma on Reindiculous brings peanut butter and chocolate with a mild booziness that doesn’t overpower the base beer and brings a creamy yet warming mouthfeel. Brewster Cogburn had the most booze on the nose of the samples I was able to try and the taste has the most barrel of the beers I’ve sampled. Woke AF’s nose was coffee forward with a perfect blend of coffee and barrel without being acidic that some brews with coffee can hold. The coffee beans in Woke AF really come through strong but balance out the roasty notes and dark chocolate base that is elevated by the barrel and booziness. Reminds me of having a spiked coffee.

Hope to see you at the event!

The first Thursday of August is always National IPA Day, another made up beer holiday that we all love to celebrate. This year I have continued to enjoy this style on a regular basis, spreading the love along side more hop balanced lagers. Whether you are a fan of this hop forward style or not, IPAs still remain the most dominant and consumed style in the craft beer scene. Nearly all breweries in the Houston area have brewed at least one in their portfolio and new variations of the style are still cropping up. Cold IPAs and india pale lagers have taken the forefront in recent media while hazy ipa seem to keep the title of fan favorite and Instagram’s beer hype king. I was not always a fan of this style as it took me about 2 years of trying different IPAs before I could come around to it. So if you are new to craft beer and still don’t understand why anyone would enjoy drinking these sometimes bitter bombs, keep trying! I will assure you, there is an IPA out there for you too! This style is diverse and if your palate changes like mine did – you won’t ever be the same. Hop heads for life.

Here are my top IPAs picks of 2022 brewed right here in Houston and perfect to celebrate with on National IPA Day!

Heavy Hands Double IPA – Spindletap Brewery

Welcome back for the second year in a row! If you read my Valentines letter to this beer, you know my mad obsession with Heavy Hands DIPA from Spindletap Brewing. This beer pours milky bright yellow with vibrant hops qualities present on all corners. This IPA has a strong citrus kick making it the true definition of Texas juice bomb! It’s medium body and soft mouthfeel continues to delight my hop head senses with each sip. This beer packs a heavy punch at a hefty 8% and if you aren’t careful – this beer will knock yo ass out! Cans are generally available in the taproom year around and local distro markets like HEB. I recommend loading up on the case special at the brewery, because the 6 month shelf life is nice. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself. You won’t want this hoppy adventure to end. Cheers to the heavy weight champ of Houston hazy beers!

Doc Hoppiday Hazy IPA – Saloon Door Brewing

Doc Hoppiday pairs nice with dice games.

This beer is my hoppy huckleberry. Coming in at 6.8%, this hazy New England style IPA from Saloon Door Brewing in Webster is an ultra smooth drinkable IPA with all the juicy characteristics hop heads crave. With all Citra hops and its bold tropical juice notes, this beer finishes dry with a slight hop bite on the end. You can always find Doc at the grocery stores (HEB and Total Wine for sure!). This week, I noticed a proper decision was made in the beer aisle.

A bag of Takis left behind for a 6 of Doc Hoppiday. HEB Pearland Parkway

Yellow Rose Smash IPA – Lone Pint Brewery

It wouldn’t be proper to leave out this Texas classic, Yellow Rose IPA from Magnolia’s Lone Pint Brewery. To be honest, I stepped away from this beer for a while due to some inconsistent quality concerns over the last two years but once I heard it was back in full swing and in environmentally safe 6 packs, I jumped back on the juicy train.

Named after a true Texas heroine, this SMaSH, Single Malt and Single Hop, IPA uses a butt ton of malt and hop released in 2012 called Mosaic (HBC 369). Whole cone mosaic hops are used for bittering, flavoring, and aroma in the kettle and is massively dry hopped for this beer’s mega citrus aroma. Believe it or not, this is still a fan favorite in the beer crowds with a dedicated following that I expect to see around for years to come.

Hanging out with Channing, Scott and a Yellow Rose IPA at the Regal Beagle in Friendswood

Tanuki IPA – Back Pew Brewing

It’s easy to get lost in amazement by all the eye catching labels in craft beer but don’t skip over this core IPA from Back Pew Brewing in Porter Texas. Tanuki is brewed with a split grist of Pilsner/Maris Otter malt with cold-whirlpool Azacca/Sultana/Comet hops giving this beer 35 IBU of punchy citrus and tropical fruit flavors. It’s then fermented with a Kveik yeast for added pineapple pop before dry hopping near the saturation point of 2.2 lbs/bbl of the 3 hops above. It’s filtered crystal clear and is a super easy drinking citrus slightly piney packed IPA. Tanuki cuts you down to size on a mellow 6.4% ABV. You will be surprised how well the juice qualities and grassy notes balance out on this beauty.

Tanuki IPA, a real patio pounder from Back Pew Brewing

Mini Boss IPA – Eureka Heights Brewing Co.

Launched in 2017, Mini Boss from Eureka Heights Brewing Co. has established itself as what I would call a classic Houston IPA. This double dry-hopped IPA is jammed full of citrus and tropical notes with Citra and Mosaic hops joining forces in this fruity IPA. This beer makes a great pair to gaming nights with buddies, a night out in Downtown with the friends or relaxing at your favorite camp site. You can normally find this beer widely available at most bars in download alongside equally great Eureka Heights offerings. Beer so good, you might even want to score a 19.2oz can to enjoy all by yourself. Do it, we won’t judge you.

Howdy y’all! I can’t believe the Tastiest Draw in the West has been around for six years now! Fresh off of their achievement of nitro canning Tasty AF, they set their eyes to throw the biggest shindig this side of the Mississippi. The party is so big – it needs more than just a single day to celebrate. This anniversary party is scheduled for this weekend, April 29th – May 1st.

We are kicking off Houston Beer Month with one of our favorite beers, Brewster Cogburn, a vanilla imperial cream ale from our friends at Saloon Door Brewing in Webster TX. If you couldn’t tell before, Saloon Door has a thing for American Westerns and this beer reminds us of a tale in true western attitude and culture. With beer names like Doc Hoppiday IPA and Say When Double IPA, Saloon Door has started an ongoing trend with a few of their beer names keeping with this oldie but goodies!

Familiar with story of Deputy Marshal Rooster Cogburn? If you have seen the movie True Grit (1969), you most likely remember John Wayne’s notable performance of this fictional character. Rooster is overweight, hard-drinking, trigger-happy lawman that was recruited by lead character Mattie, who convinces him that he has “grit” and reputation that makes him best suited for the job to find her father’s killer. Featured on the label of this 12oz can is “Brewster”, a charming rooster with iconic eye patch and shiny badge.

Taster glass with Brewster Cogburn

The beer itself pours a golden orange with frothy white head that sticks to glassware. Immediately, the aroma of fresh baked vanilla cookies hits the air upon opening and the sweet malt character dominates the flavor with each sip. This beer finishes clean and refreshing with a subtle honey touch and could make an excellent brunch beer choice or after dinner treat for dessert.

I visited with Jason Graham, one of the owners of Saloon Door and turns out this beer is an original favorite of the brew house and one they just recently started to can for distribution. With nitro cans coming soon (more on that later in the month) and new taproom offerings each week, they are ramping up on exactly what they set out to do: Always have a beer for everyone. While Brewster has that nice vanilla touch, the beer profile of a cream ale is still approachable to new craft beer drinkers and Saloon Door didn’t miss the mark on that fact. The high ABV % on this beer brings down the sweetness profile on vanilla, leaving behind an enjoyable beer without the fuss of overpowering sting of being too sweet. With its light body I can see why more and more drinkers are flocking to Saloon Door beer. After all, if you are gonna play the role of craft beer drinker, why not have something that offers a bit more punch? Catty Corner, the classic cream ale is still a crowd favorite at the brewery and usually available on tap for your less adventurous days!

Brewster Cogburn Imperial Vanilla Cream Ale

Overall, great beer from a great Houston brewery and can’t wait to see more beer experiments from Saloon Door! Take a trip to the NASA area and visit the taproom – let them know Sylvia sent you to try out the cream ale on nitro if you get a chance! You wont regret it!

Summertime in Houston has me reaching for all the ice cold crispy light beers with tons of flavor. Whether you are enjoying a few beers after work in your backyard, or out around town with friends – here are a few Houston area beers you should try that are guaranteed to make you feel cool this summer.

Kemah Suprema

American light lager – Saloon Door Brewing

While being known for their big boozy pastry styled stouts, Saloon Door Brewery in Webster Texas just released their first ‘light’ beer in the taproom. This beer features a light malt bread like character with subtle yeast fruitiness. Because it’s low on the bitterness scale and high carbonation, it leaves behind a clean refreshing finish. This beer can only be purchased in the taproom. For now….this could change real soon.

Gang Plank Gose

Gose – Back Pew Brewing

Coming in at 3.9%, this beer features a pleasant orange and lemon aroma with a slightly salty tart finish. Head brewer Bobby Harl likes to call this beer his “adult Gatorade beer”. This beer is perfect for someone who wants that extra bit of flavor without all the artificial additions. Definitely one of my top picks for summer shotgun beers. Batten down the hatches, down she ‘gose’!

Spa Day IPA

Hazy IPA – No Label Brewing Company and Vallensons’ Brewing Company Collaboration

Who doesn’t love a good spa day? Especially involving good friends. When Valle, Tom and Ryan got together to brew this hazy IPA, they created what I believe is No Label’s best IPA to date. BOOM. Spa Day IPA is a super crushable hazy ipa with a soft creamy mouthfeel that makes day drinking way too easy. What I enjoy most about this beer is the clean hop finish with no lingering after flavor. No hop bath bomb used here – just good clean water chemistry!

Welcome to the 2017 edition of the Houston Beer Guide Bracket. Last year’s bracket was a blast, with some nail-biters, a ballot-stuffing scandal, a handful of upsets, and Lone Pint Yellow Rose ultimately cruising to the title.

We’ve made some changes compared to last year, when we used weighted Untappd rankings to fill out the field from 1 to 64. This year, we still leaned on ratings, but we also opened up the selection process to the HBG staff, our own version of the NCAA’s selection committee. We awarded “automatic bids” to breweries that wouldn’t have qualified based solely on rankings. We eliminated one-time releases (no Divine Reserves, Bishop’s Barrels, etc.). And we limited the field to independent craft breweries — you know what that means.

Enough with the pregame analysis. Let’s get to the #HBGBracket. Voting for the first round ends Monday night, March 20th. The second round will begin Tuesday, March 21st. We’ll update results on Facebook and Twitter.

Update #1 – Round of 64 recap:
The first round has wrapped up and there were quite a few surprises. 12-seed SpindleTap Hop Gusher took down 5-seed Saint Arnold Endeavour, with a respectable win of 56%. In our far north vs. far south matchup, 14-seed B-52 Double IPA beat 3-seed Galveston Island Citra Mellow. Copperhead King of Terrors managed to eke out a win against Buffalo Bayou Vanilla Mocha Sunset, in a match decided by just 13 votes. In the battle of Clear Lake, Texas Beer Refinery’s Gulf Coast Gose held its ground against BAKFISH I Tell You Wit. Unfortunately, Texas Beer Refinery Catalyst wasn’t able to repeat last year’s Cinderella run. Yellow Rose continued last year’s tradition of dominating the competition, knocking out newcomer Running Walker Texas Reserve. Check out the rest of the results at the bottom of the page.

Update #2 – Round of 32 recap:
Well that was certainly interesting. The majority of this round went to chalk, with the 1-seeds doing especially well. Dig into the middle of the field a little bit, and you’ll see some very surprising results. 12-seed SpindleTap Hop Gusher continued its Cinderella run, leading 4-seed Brash Pussy Wagon the entire round. At the 24-hour mark, Brash Vulgar Display of Power vs Brash Cortado was exactly 50/50, but lower-seeded VDoP eventually won out. 11-seed Copperhead King of Terrors managed another narrow victory, this time over 3-seed No Label Nightmare on 1st Street. There were no upsets in the Easy Drinking region, dashing the chances of a Pilsner head-to-head between Back Pew and Saint Arnold. How will old-standard Buried Hatchet fare against new-hotness Raspberry AF in the next round? Last year’s champion, Lone Pint Yellow Rose, faces Cinderella; is there a stunning upset on the horizon? Will King of Terrors be able to sneak past Brash EZ-7 and into the Elite 8? It’s all up to you.

Update #3 – Sweet 16 recap:
Let’s start with the fun parts: Almost every one of the match up in the Sweet 16 ended within 100 votes. For nearly 1,500 votes, that’s pretty impressive. Brazos Valley 7 Spanish Angels overcame Saint Arnold 5 O’Clock Pils by 107 votes, 4-seed Lone Pint The Jabberwocky upset 1-seed Brash Abide with 92 votes, Saloon Door Tasty AF beat Brash Vulgar Display of Power by 39 votes, and Pumpkinator vs Rocket Fuel was decided by just 32 votes. Every beer included in the Sweet 16 deserved it’s place this far into the tournament. SpindleTap found a post in one of the beer groups by someone bragging to have voted for Hop Gusher several hundred times in a short period Monday afternoon. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to undo the damage that was done. After a discussion with the team at SpindleTap, they offered to forfeit the game to Yellow Rose. At the T-11 hour mark, SpindleTap had the lead, and they appeared to gain more ground in the morning. As stated earlier, we believe that every beer that made it to the sweet 16 deserved to be there. Hop Gusher beat Endeavour and Pussy Wagon without any intervention, and there is a very strong likelihood that it would have beat Yellow Rose as well. Yellow Rose faces some stiff competition in the next round with Saint Arnold Art Car, as do all of the beers in the Elite 8.

Update #4 – Elite 8 recap:
The giants have fallen. Saloon Door rounded up their supporters to knock out 1-seed Saint Arnold Pumpkinator. Brazos Valley had a late surge of support: 7 Spanish Angels rallied from being down 49/51 at the 24 hour mark to come out ahead 54/46 and take out 1-seed Southern Star Buried Hatchet. 1-seed Yellow Rose clobbered 2-seed Art Car in a round that was expected to be more of a challenge for last year’s champion. Brash’s 7-seed EZ-7 avenged 1-seed Abide’s earlier elimination and trounced Lone Pint The Jabberwocky. Lone Pint Yellow Rose is the only 1-seed that remains in the tournament – how will it fare against the Saloon Door posse, which has already overcome some quite impressive opponents? Will EZ-7 or 7 Spanish Angels be the lucky one to advance to the finals?

Update #5 – Final Four recap:
Yellow Rose, our last 1-seed and last year’s champion was bested by the chocolate & peanut butter stout from Clear Lake, Tasty AF. 7 Spanish Angels, the coffee brown ale from Brenham, rallied its supporters to eliminate Brash EZ-7. It’s all come down to this: Saloon Door Tasty AF versus Brazos Valley 7 Spanish Angels. Peanut butter & chocolate vs coffee. Both beers eliminated some very impressive challengers along the way. Which beer will be crowned the best beer in Houston by the readers of Houston Beer Guide?

Update #6 – Championship recap:
Wow, that was a surprisingly close match. Saloon Door’s Tasty AF is now the reigning ‘Best Beer in Houston’ as chosen by the readers of Houston Beer Guide. If you haven’t tried it or any of the other 63 beers included in this year’s bracket, I highly recommend that you seek them out.

The changes we made to the beer selection process this year were a direct result of the conversations we had with our readers last year. If you have suggestions for ways we can make it even better next year, shoot us an email, we’d love to hear your ideas: info@houstonbeerguide.com.

The West Coast vibe of Saloon Door Brewery isn’t obvious when you walk through the doors: cedar planks cover the lower half of the walls, vintage chairs surround the tables, and even the name evokes a distinctly Texas feel. But when you talk to the crew responsible for the idea and execution of getting this new brewery up and running, you begin to see how Saloon Door drew inspiration from some of the breweries of Southern California.

jason

Jason Graham and Jeff Graham

Owner Jason Graham previously worked at a baseball instructional facility in Vista, CA. It is 60 feet and 6 inches from the pitcher’s mound to home plate, and it didn’t take long for Jason to discover that Mother Earth Brewing Co. was just a few feet further from the facility than that. Parents would drop off their children to play baseball, then head to Mother Earth to pass the time, relaxing and enjoying a beer. Mother Earth’s sessionable beer and sense of community led Jason and his brother-in-law Josh, a homebrewer back in Texas, to wonder why something similar couldn’t be done near Jason’s hometown of Galveston. So they got to work infusing the SoCal vibe with Texas hospitality in order to execute their game plan: creating a community brewery with creative yet approachable beers.

After six months of looking for locations, the Saloon Door crew–a group of four after the addition of Jeff Graham and Austin Webber–found their future home right off the NASA Bypass on I-45 South. This bypass sees a high volume of traffic every day, and they felt it was the perfect location to lure in the road-weary locals and provide a place to hang out and blow off some steam. The family-friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the rustic taproom is the perfect place to unwind after a stressful day of work and I-45 traffic.

Their current line-up, brewed on a 10 barrel system, is full of 5-7% beers which invite drinkers to sit and stay awhile. With the vanilla cream ale, their creativity shines by adding a unique twist to a sessionable classic. On the other end of the spectrum, their peanut butter stout hits all the right notes for a full-bodied dessert beer, even at 5%.

Saloon Door will be open this weekend for their second soft opening, and if you make it out to the tasting room you will be one of the first people to try their anxiously awaited IPA. You can also look forward to catered food pairings including their milk stout paired with baked beans and a pulled pork sandwich.

If you can’t make it to the soft opening, mark your calendars for the weekend of April 29-May 1 when Saloon Door holds their Grand Opening party. This community focused brewery is just what the area needs, and if they live up to their West Coast inspirations it will surely be one that the entire city of Houston can be proud of.
