On Saturday, September 30th, the gates opened at Fiesta Gardens in Austin for the 2023 Texas Craft Brewers Guild Craft Brewers Festival.  The festival, which is a one-day event, is a chance for Guild Member breweries from all across the state to gather and either introduce themselves to first time patrons or catch up with long time fans.  Most importantly, the festival serves as a major fundraiser each year for the Craft Brewers Guild, which helps the support member breweries, breweries in planning and provides political action support aimed at helping change Texas laws to benefit and grow the craft beer industry.

Houston Guild member breweries always represent the city well at the Craft Brewers Festival, and this year was no exception. Nine different breweries from the greater Houston area participated in this year’s event. Four as sponsors of event: Saint Arnold, No Label, Lone Pint and True Anomaly.  The other participants were Eureka Heights Brew Co., Excalibur Brewing, Galveston Bay Brewing, Galveston Island Brewing, Great Heights Brew Co.

Saint Arnold has been a supporter of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild going back to its inception in 2009.

“Saint Arnold was a founding member of the Guild and our owner, Brock Wagner, was an inaugural Board member. The Guild has been integral in helping to change laws in Texas to create an atmosphere where small and independent breweries can actually thrive.”

Lennie Ambrose, Chief Marketing Officer at Saint Arnold Brewing

Lennie also acts as a member of the Board of Directors for the Craft Brewers Guild.

The festival itself was held on a hot Saturday afternoon in south Austin, hosted by the Fiesta Gardens event space.  Entry into the event was quick and very organized, being handled by numerous volunteer staff to make sure that lines to get into the event did not back up and slow down.  The brewery tents themselves were sorted out in numerous different sections and placed in alphabetical order.  Many of the sponsor tents were arranged around the center pavilion of the space, giving them central access to the event, and some highly coveted shade.

One of the main attractions at the event was the True Anomaly tent. True Anomaly was named Large Brewery Group Brewery of the Year back in February at the Craft Brewers Guild Brewers Cup awards.  This distinction is not taken lightly by the brewery.

“Being named the ‘large-brewery group,’ Texas Brewery of the Year has already had such an amazing impact, and we’re exceptionally proud of the beers that got us into the spotlight.  True Anomaly brews a wide variety of styles, though I think most know at this point that the heart of our beer program is driven by Belgians, Saisons, and Barrel-aged projects that push the boundaries of exploration.  It’s these exact beers that were recognized during the competition which led to the Brewery of the Year distinction, and not just for True Anomaly.  The ‘small-brewery group’ Texas Brewery of the Year was also recognized largely by their experimental styles.”

Michael Duckworth of True Anomaly

Both True Anomaly and Vector Brewing partnered to release a special, experimental collaboration Japanese Rice Lager for the Brewers Fest called Daikuko. The release was a 4.1% alcohol by volume crushable brew made with sushi grade Yamada Nishiki rice and hopped with Japanese Sorachi Ace.

My first stop at the Brewers Fest was at the Eureka Heights tent for a taster of 713 Pils, a brewery staple and personal favorite.  Prior to the Festival I reached out to Eureka Heights for a comment as to why they believe the Craft Brewers Guild is important and the importance of participating in the festival.

“We believe that the Texas Craft Brewers Guild is incredibly important to the craft beer industry in Texas. They provide a ton of educational and networking opportunities, as well as provide a unified voice for legislative matters. The community of craft breweries is incredibly strong in Texas, and the Guild is a big reason why. Plus, the festival is a blast.”

Casey Motes, Co-Founder of Eureka Heights Brewing

Casey Motes is also a member of the Craft Brewers Guild Board of Directors.

While tasting my 713 Pils, I began conversing with another patron at the Eureka Heights booth named Ben Tillman. Ben is a native Houstonian turned Austin transplant who attends the Brewers Fest annually and likes to catch up on the offerings from his home town. He joined my venturing around the festival and was asked what he looks forward to the most at the event Houston beer wise.  Ben said, “I don’t get to go back home too often, and getting Houston beer up here (in Austin) is kind of hit or miss, so I try to check out the Houston breweries to see what kind of stuff they are coming out with and compare it to what Austin has to offer. I don’t do social media like Insta or anything, so I enjoy sampling the Houston beers at this festival.”

Another stop on my list was Galveston Bay Brewing, which had a special release available at the Pink Boots Society booth, called Katie and the Giant Peach, a fruited blonde ale.  Unfortunately, Katie and the Giant Peach was floated before I could even get a taster. Alas, gone means gone. This was one of those beers that I had interest in trying while at the festival and had reached out ahead of time to the Head Brewer of Galveston Bay Brewing Skyler Forshage for some info on.

“In addition to our support for the festival, we’re strong advocates of the Pink Boots Society, recognizing the vital work they do, especially here in Texas. This year, one of our lead bartenders and Pink Boots member, Katie (Rawson), led our Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day, helping to create a unique blonde ale recipe featuring roasted peaches, fresh peach puree, and the latest Pink Boots hop blend. Katie is no stranger to brewing and in fact she’s helped out in nearly every aspect of the brewery over the years from brewing and packaging to managing the bar so it was really cool to have her involved in this year’s collab.”

Skyler Forshage – Brewer at Galveston Bay Brewing

I guess this means a trip to the Galveston Bay brewery for me to try this beer out.

Overall, this year’s fest was an amazing experience.  I ran into several good friends, both fans of craft beer and people in the brewing industry. It was great getting to spend some time with him over some beer and with mutual friends.

This festival was extremely well organized and loved by all that attended. There was a lot of excellent craft beer from around the State to sample, and the staff, both brewery affiliated and volunteers, were welcoming and provided as much information about the beer they were serving while trying to keep the lines moving.  There was plenty of water stations and portable restrooms throughout the event as well.  Friendly people and plenty of beer can’t help but equal a good time.

I would like to finish this off by offering a special Thank You to the staff at the Texas Craft Brewers Guild for assisting me in providing answers to several questions for this story and being exceptionally friendly to a newbie covering this event!

Some of the beer samples I had at the event include:

  • 2013 Pumpkinator Imperial Pumpkin Stout – Saint Arnold Brewing (Houston)
  • 713 Pils – Eureka Heights Brew Co. (Houston)
  • Avalonian Double Hazy IPA – Excalibur Brewing (Spring)
  • Bishops Legacy Kentish Strong Ale – Hell or High Water Brewing (Liberty Hill)
  • Daikuko Rice Lager – True Anomaly (Houston) & Vector Brewing (Dallas) collaboration
  • Excelsior! IPA – Galveston Island Brewing (Galveston)
  • Full Grown Jack Imperial Pumpkin Porter – Tupps Brewery (Austin)
  • Festbier – Fast Friends Beer Company (Austin)
  • Mexican Lager – Front Yard Brewing (Spicewood)
  • Ponderosa Fruited Kettle Sour – Back Unturned Brewing Co. (San Antonio)
  • There’s a Bee in My Boot Honey Witbier, Pink Boots Release – Beerberg Brewing (Austin)

As a horror fan, I am always looking forward to October especially with all the fun festivals leading up to my favorite holiday, Halloween.

Wicked was just unleashed upon us in Houston as the elusive haunted beer mascot from No Label Brewing, Murkey Myers has now broken out of his cage and is on the loose, causing havoc and chaos that we all know and love. Fresh off of winning a Global Crushie for best beer mascot – he has somehow gained more power and is out on the prowl looking for trouble.

October is now the month of Murkey, as Murkey has spread to Vallensons’, Elder Son, Galveston Bay, Project Halo, Megaton, and Senate Avenue – each doing their beer in the style of Murkey Myers. I’m excited to see how Murkey’s tour of chaos turns out and to see everyone’s unique twist on the style. With Murkey’s reach spreading, we must find a way to contain him and lock him back up in the Katy silos. But first, let’s have a little fun with him.

This year, No Label is inviting everyone to embark on a haunted hop quest. Visit all 7 breweries and stamp your Murkey Myers passport for a chance to conjure a special Limited-Edition Month of Murkey tin tacker designed by Anthony Gorrity. Beware: you’ll need to check with each brewery for cryptic clues and info.

Check out the details on the passport here from No Label’s Facebook post: Read More.

Murkey (short for Murkey Myers DIPA) lives true to its name, pours a murky pale gold color and has a very upfront aroma of grapefruit. Pay close attention and you will find a mild citrus and a pine note that lingers on the back end balancing out the nose. Upon the first sip, I immediately notice the grapefruit characteristic from the New Zealand Pacific Sunrise hops. There is also a mild fruit flavor that cuts through the hoppy bitterness that makes this beer very smooth to drink. When I say fruit, think of orange citrus or almost mango-like sweetness that balances out the hop bite and makes it an easy drinker despite the ABV sitting at 7.8%. Even though Murkey seems like a tough guy, his mouthfeel is very soft and smooth. For such a hoppy beer I expected there to be a bit of an overwhelming bite, nonetheless No Label managed to find a beautiful balance with the hop bite and fruit character. The fact that the body isn’t too heavy, and it doesn’t weigh you down or make you bloated making it easy to come back for more, which I struggle to find in a hazy double IPA.

I will be splitting up the visits between days to compare and contrast what differences each brewery will bring to the table with their versions.

Canned Murkey will be releasing on October 13th and can be found at the No Label taproom in Katy, HEB, Total Wine, and in select craft beer bars around town. However, if you visit the brewery beware that Murkey doesn’t catch you off guard and alone, rumor is he already took over GABF and Chicago. Stay safe out there and if you see me at any of these locations, come have a beer with me, and let’s discuss which version was your favorite.

I’ve talked about Paradigm Brewing to alot of people since I’ve first made the trip to their beautiful taproom and they have a huge milestone coming up. What milestone do you ask? They’re celebrating their one year anniversary and they’re doing it in a huge way with the Bottom of the Barrel anniversary party on December 17th. Paradigm is tucked away in Tomball in what seems like an escape away from the big city feel and I enjoy their wooded property that the brewery sits on. During my last visit, I was told about a barrel aged project they had going on and was allowed to sample the stout they had been storing in the barrel. I also want to be the first to tell you – they knocked this one out the park.

Bottom of the Barrel Event at Paradigm

Although I haven’t tasted the final product, there isn’t really a day that has gone by that I haven’t mentioned it or thought about that sweet chocolatey boozy stout. The beer is so highly anticipated that they are having a huge celebration along with their one year anniversary. The brewery is opening at 11 am and I plan to be there early to secure my bottles. First up is Revelation, a Belgian Quad blended with a stout aged in bourbon barrels. I’m told this will be an ever evolving bottle series through the upcoming years featuring a different blend of beer. The second bottle is Early Morning Shakes – a beautiful stout that was aged in Heaven Hill barrels. During my last sample the chocolate really stood out and I’ve heard that it has only become more complex with time. Both bottles can be picked up on the 17th for $17.99 during the event. I’m excited to pick up a few of each and plan to cellar store them to enjoy through the year. If that’s not enough new beer releases for you then you’ll have to attend the party and try a Hazelnut variant or the Irish cream that will be on tap only. I’m excited to see how each of those flavors will blend in with the base beers.

A limited amount of VIP packages will be available starting December 9th until the 16th and will probably go fast so act quick. What do the VIP packages include you ask? You will receive one of each of the bottles that are being released, a paradigm coffee cup that you’ll fill with more than just coffee I’m sure. Breakfast will be available for VIP pass holders as well. After breakfast you’ll tour the brewery with the founders of the brewery and get to do a meet and greet with them. This is a great opportunity to get to talk one on one with one of the founders to discuss beer or all things Paradigm. Last but most definitely not least, the part that I look forward to the most is you will receive a limited release flight that includes barrel aged brewery only beers that will be on tap for the special occasion! For those of you that are procrastinators just like me and still need to shop for Christmas gifts for loved ones, Paradigm has you covered. During the event, Paradigm will feature 20 vendors for you to browse and pick up some of those last minute hand made gifts.

Check out all the details about this event on Facebook.

This is a going to be a great event, hope to see you out there!

Saloon Door Brewing and I have something in common that I’ve said many times before and will continue to say. What do we have in common besides a love for good beer? We both believe it’s always stout season – year around. That being said, Saloon Door is hosting their annual barrel fest this Saturday November 19th at 2pm. This is an event I attended yearly to taste every barrel aged beer that is available. This year, the brewery plans to bring 7 beers to the table that I can’t wait to get my hands on.

This week, I was lucky enough to preview a few samples of The original Russian Imperial Stout named “I Must Break you”. It’s perfectly balanced with dark chocolate and roast. I can’t wait to try it once it’s been in the barrel. Also on the list for the barrel fest is my personal favorite Reindiculous – a fantastic peanut butter and white chocolate russian imperial Stout. One new beer that I hope to try is the Funfetti Cake Imperial Cream Ale – sounds like a party!

May be an image of text that says 'Barrel Fest 2022 Taproom Beer Releases BBA Must Break You RIS (13%) BBA Ludicrous AF RIS (13%) BBA Reindiculous RIS (13%) BBA Woke AF RIS (13%) BBA Orange Cordial RIS (13%) S BRENINE BREWING BBA Brewster Cogburn ICA (10.6%) BBA Funfetti Cake ICA (10.6%)'

For this event, snag a VIP pass to get a flight of your choice bourbon barrel aged goodies, a snifter pour of any BBA beer, and a large 32oz crowler to take home. While you are there, take a brewery tour with the awesome brewers and get a glimpse behind the scenes of the amazing beer being made at Saloon Door.

VIP PASS ($50 – w/$65 value) includes BBA flight (five 4oz pours)- BBA snifter pour (9oz)- BBA crowler to go beer (32oz)- Brewery tour w/a snifter of your choice.

I mentioned my favorite beer Saloon Door makes is Reindiculous and I had the pleasure of sampling it after being aged in a bourbon barrel. The white chocolate greets you up from and brings a smile to your face followed by creamy peanut butter. On the backend you get that nice warming feeling that will really go a long way to help fight against this weekends low temperatures that are creeping in. The aroma on Reindiculous brings peanut butter and chocolate with a mild booziness that doesn’t overpower the base beer and brings a creamy yet warming mouthfeel. Brewster Cogburn had the most booze on the nose of the samples I was able to try and the taste has the most barrel of the beers I’ve sampled. Woke AF’s nose was coffee forward with a perfect blend of coffee and barrel without being acidic that some brews with coffee can hold. The coffee beans in Woke AF really come through strong but balance out the roasty notes and dark chocolate base that is elevated by the barrel and booziness. Reminds me of having a spiked coffee.

Hope to see you at the event!

If you know anything about this trio clan of brewery business owners, you know they are always up for fun and celebrating. Call it brewers luck (brewers skill if you ask me!) – it’s not every year that your friends would also win a World Beer Cup in the same competing year. If you don’t know how big of a deal this is, let me share that the World Beer Cup is the most prestigious beer competition in the world, being often referred to as “The Olympics of Beer Competitions”. With Saint Arnold’s gold cup for Weedwacker back in 2018, there is now only a total of 4 World Beer Cup winners in Houston area. So what do you get when you combine friendship, beer brewing and your love for the city? How about special beer collaboration and tap takeover parties around the city to celebrate! No Label Brewing in Katy, Vallensons’ Brewing in Pearland, and True Anomaly Brewing in Downtown just kicked off their week of celebrations with special beer release of ‘For All the H’ Hazy Pale Ale – a beer brewed to commemorate their accomplishments in the 2022 World Beer Cup.

Category 25: Fruited American-Style Sour Ale – Total 163 Entries
Gold: Pink, Vallensons’ Brewing Co., Pearland, TX

Category 95: Imperial India Pale Ale – Total 174 Entries
Silver: Cali Boy, No Label Brewing Co., Katy, TX

Category 31: Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer – Total 82 Entries
Bronze: Sea of Waves, True Anomaly Brewing Co., Houston, TX

I asked Tom Paynter, with No Label Brewing how this concept got kicked off in the first place. He mentioned it was heavy on his mind during his trip back home from Minneapolis. After pitching the idea, the brew teams talked back and forth over a couple weeks to work it in the brew schedule and a beer style was decided among the group. No Label was the obvious choice for production given the capacity of the brewhouse. No Label and Vallensons’ had teamed up with before with the launch of Spa Day IPA back in June 2021 so the label was modified to include True Anomaly as well.

“It’s such a rarity to win a World Beer Cup and it just so happens that we’re all actually good friends – which made it easier to ask Vallensons’ and True Anomaly to join us on this crazy adventure,” said Tom Paynter, No Label’s Co-Owner and Marketing Director. “Collaborations are hard enough, but a three way collaboration – GET OUT OF TOWN!,” says Paynter. “I just hope these guys are still my friends after this week.

No way Tom, I am staying in town for this release. And you should too!

For All the H – Label art designed by Anthony Gorrity

This collaboration beer is a 5% Hazy Pale Ale. According to Untappd (listed under No Label Brewery), it pours pale gold and extremely hazy. This beer features a combination of New Zealand and American hops and tasters can expect the dried apricot and grapefruit aroma with subtle hints of citrus and pine in the finish. The flavor is much like the aroma with grapefruit in the forefront and hints of stone fruit, citrus and pine in the finish. Creamy tongue mouthfeel on a medium body with low bitterness and a dry soft finish. Interesting profile! With shared imagery and similar profile, this beer sounds very much like the Spa Day IPA release.

No Label Brewing Co. Facebook

This beer has a week long release schedule kicking off at No Label Brewing, where it was produced and labeled. The party then will moves to Vallensons’ for a Thursday evening release event. (Being this is one of two breweries in my hometown of Pearland, come say hey!) Finally, the celebrations will blast off north into Downtown Houston at True Anomaly Brewing for the final release event. Six packs of this beer will only be available at each brewery. Each brewery only received 2 halves and 20 cases so this beer is super limited. During the launch party at No Label this past Saturday, six-packs sold out within hours.

In addition to the taproom parties, Triple Brewery Tap Takeovers featuring beers from all three breweries, including Vallenson’s which has never distributed their beer outside of their taproom will be happening all across the city. There will be a total of 7 taps at each tap takeover with 5 happenings this weekend.

Celebration Schedule This Week:

Saturday, November 12th – Taproom Party, No Label Brewing, Katy, Texas
Tuesday, November 15th – Triple Brewery Tap Takeover, Thistle Draftshop, Spring, Texas
Wednesday, November, 16th – Triple Brewery Tap Takeover, Nobi Public House in Webster, Texas
Thursday, November 17th – Taproom Party, Vallensons’, Pearland, Texas
Friday, November 18th – Triple Brewery Tap Takeover, Growler Spot, Fulshear, Texas
Saturday, November 19th – Taproom Party, True Anomaly, Downtown Houston

So grab a pint of this beer (and 6-pack to go if you can) in your area and cheers to Houston beer friendships and out of this world brewing accomplishment taking place in our great city!

Cheers!

NOLA Brewing is delivering on the hype with a full slate of launch events in the Houston area next week.

The party is officially getting started at Flying Saucer Monday evening. NOLA will have several of their flagship beers, as well as Piety, a sour beer aged in red wine barrels with tart cherries. Since it’s a Monday at Flying Saucer, all draft beers are $3, giving you the opportunity to check out NOLA’s range of beers without breaking the bank. Central Market is setting up their NOLA display Monday, and a demo tasting will follow Tuesday. For our College Station beer loving friends, West End Elixir Company will have a mix of Funk Series and IPAs on draft. I recently drank the Out Tequil-Ya tequila barrel aged sour at the brewery and I can assure you that their offerings are legit.

Tuesday will feature a tap takeover at Moon Tower Inn. Funk Series kegs will be served along with a special on the Coonass dog with the purchase of a NOLA pint. The Louisiana spirit will be running strong at the East End staple.

For the Southsiders, Flood Independent Distribution is putting on a pub crawl around 4 NASA area bars featuring every beer NOLA is sending to Houston. The party starts at J. Henry’s Draught House at 4:30 PM, moves to Beers Looking at You at 6 PM, heads to Nobi Public House at 7:30 PM, and wraps up at the “OG” Nobi Asian Grill from 9 PM to 10:30 PM. The first 12 people to get their cards punched at all 4 stops will have an opportunity to purchase a batch #1 bottle of Desire, a raspberry sour ale. Only 5 cases of this beer made it to Texas. (Click here for more details, including the taplist at each stop.)

Wednesday brings a slew of events throughout the city. Downtown Flying Saucer will be having another event, this time offering flights of NOLA’s finest, including releases from their Funk Series. Flying Saucer Sugar Land is debuting 5 of NOLA’s beers on their Elvis Glass night. Drink of Ages is featuring NOLA on their radio show starting at 7 PM, and will also be serving their lineup of liquid offerings.

On Thursday, The Hop Stop will be releasing NOLA’s brews, including a case of the limited release Desire raspberry sour ale.

In addition to the events listed above, retail locations throughout the city will be receiving their shipments of NOLA’s beers throughout the week. Expect their mainstays, a healthy selection of IPAs, and a limited selection of Funk Series bottles around town.

Representatives from the brewery – Dylan Lintern (COO), Derek Lintern (Director of Funk), and Ryan Veuthey (Brand Manager) – will be in town this week to share their love and knowledge of NOLA’s beers. They are not holding anything back from the Houston market, and this week of launch events shows their commitment to our beer scene. Kirk Coco, Owner / CEO of NOLA says, “We are excited to bring a little NOLA Funk to the Texas market!” Let’s return that love with a solid showing at these events and a full sampling of their offerings. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Heights Bike Trail Brewery Tour Inline Image

This Sunday, May 7th, Holler, Platypus, and Eureka Heights are teaming up for a 3-stop brewery tour – on bikes. The majority of the route will be along the Heights Hike & Bike trail or on dedicated bike lanes, so it should be an easy ride. It’s even easier when you think about everyone who just completed the MS 150.

It will work a lot like the Saint Arnold pub crawls: pick up a card at your first stop, get it stamped at all 3 stops, and earn a free t-shirt. The shirts have to be picked up at Eureka Heights, so there are two strategies: 1) park at Eureka Heights, bike to Platypus & Holler, then bike back to your car, or 2) park at Holler, bike to Platypus, then to Eureka Heights, and return back to your car at Holler. Either way it’s less than a 10-mile round trip (Google Maps says that will take about an hour). If you want a group experience, Tap & Pedal Bike Touring will lead a group from Holler at 1pm.

If you don’t have a bike (or if you’re like me and your tires are always flat) there is a B-cycle station a 5-minute ride away from Holler at Stude park or a 7-minute ride away from Holler at Spotts park. Bonus: if you choose Spotts park and you return the bike around sundown then you can also watch the Waugh bridge bats take off.

(Hopefully we don’t actually need to tell you this, but please bike and drink responsibly. If you don’t feel safe biking, let a member of the brewery staff know and they will store your bike overnight.)
